We continue the conversation of sustainability initiatives by MÜNZING and pursuing our high sustainability goals. In this article our R&D team explains how they face the challenge of creating sustainable formulations that match or exceed performance of standard fossil additives. By discovering and utilizing new raw materials and technologies we aim to reduce CO2 footprint of our products and further extend our comprehensive portfolio of green additives to support paint manufacturers in achieving their objectives, without compromising on performance. The article appeared in the September issue of PCI and was written by Tina Leyh (Sustainability Coordinator and Lab Manager), Dr. Patrick Röske (Lab Manager R&D Sustainable Additives) and Michael Bilger (Technology Coordinator), all located in our R&D department at MÜNZING CHEMIE in Abstatt, Germany. MÜNZING CHEMIE GmbH celebrates its successful participation in the innovation competition "TOP 100". As a result of demonstrating its innovative qualities, the company was awarded the distinction of Top Innovator 2023. MÜNZING CHEMIE GmbH participated in the innovation competition for the first time in 2023 and is therefore even more pleased to be able to place itself directly among the 100 most innovative German medium-sized companies, among which only a few companies from the chemical industry are represented overall. MÜNZING is a globally active manufacturer of specialty additives headquartered in Abstatt, Baden-Württemberg, and employs around 630 people worldwide. Innovation was already in the blood of the company's founder, who in 1830 was the first person in Germany to succeed in producing sulfuric acid. Today, the family business is in the 6th generation of the Münzing family and the current Managing Director, Dr. Michael Münzing, is committed to this tradition. His credo is "I always want to be at the forefront, to be a pioneer. I'd rather get my fingers burnt and learn from it." The innovation competition is based on a scientific selection process. On behalf of compamedia, the organizer of the TOP 100 comparison, the innovation researcher Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Franke from the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration and his team examined MÜNZING based on more than 100 criteria from five categories: Innovation-promoting top management, innovation climate, innovative processes and organization, external orientation/open innovation, and innovation success. Of particular importance is whether a company's innovations are merely a product of chance or are systematically planned and thus repeatable in the future. Thanks to the creative freedom for employees, openness to new ideas and moderation of the innovation process by management, the company scores particularly well in the category of Innovation-promoting top management. Worth highlighting here is the integration of sustainability and digitalization, which were also evaluated in this category. MÜNZING attaches great importance to the development of environmentally friendly and resource-saving solutions and to the sustainable and efficient design of production processes, which is optimally supported by advances in digitalization. This is confirmed by the likewise very good rating in the Innovative Processes and Organization category. This is evidence of the company's ability to quickly adapt to changing customer needs and technologies and to optimally track the market and competition through constant monitoring. Here, MÜNZING stands out with above-average ratings in flexibility and agility, as well as short decision-making paths and a clear design of the innovation process. "We improve our customers' products," is how Managing Director Malte Koffka sums up the company's activities. "Our specialty additives make up only a small fraction of the product formulation but provide the finishing touches in the end application so that the product can fulfill its function optimally." Innovation in terms of customer needs is an important driver of success, which is why MÜNZING maintains close customer relationships. Nevertheless, participation in the innovation competition also provided information about yet untapped potential, in the exploration of which the company is already investing through its own teams and projects on the topics of innovation and sustainability. This strategy is another element in MÜNZING's almost 200-year company history to continue to be at the forefront and to actively shape the future of the chemical industry. You will find more information about the innovative strenght and participation in the top 100 competition in the MÜNZING CHEMIE company portrait. If you want to learn more about the competition itself and the scientific selection process, check out the top 100 website.

Last Monday, on April 24, we reopened the building in Salzstraße, Heilbronn as part of a beautiful celebration with many colleagues from our Abstatt and Heilbronn locations. As part of the three-year renovation phase, the building, which was originally built in 1947 after World War 2nd, was completely gutted and now shines in new splendor both inside and out. The removal of some walls has created large, bright and modern offices, meeting rooms and laboratory space, which the employees in Heilbronn were delighted to move into.

Looking for an innovative solution to reduce your company's environmental impact without sacrificing performance? Look no further than WÜKONIL® NAT 1000, our revolutionary new wax dispersion. WÜKONIL® NAT 1000 is a wax dispersion made from renewable, bio-degradable raw materials that aims to replace traditional paraffin wax emulsions without compromising on product performance! It can be used in every application where traditional paraffin emulsions are in use to provide water repellency, such as wall paints, plasters, wood coatings and barrier coatings. One of the most significant advantages of WÜKONIL® NAT 1000 compared to paraffin is its high melting point of 75-85°C. This feature improves the product's performance in exterior coatings, resulting in better temperature stability, anti-blocking effects and less dirt pickup. To learn more about WÜKONIL® NAT 1000 and other custom-made solutions from MÜNZING visit our booth 538 in hall 1 during the European Coating Show. The environmental awareness of consumers is increasing, and so environmentally friendly paints and coatings are also attracting more and more attention. Sustainable raw materials should be used and, especially when used indoors, no harmful substances should be emitted by the paint into the ambient air - but without compromising on performance. And that is exactly our approach! We are committed to develop environmentally friendly additives that meet the needs of our customers, by providing zero VOC and low or even zero SVOC content and improving the durability of a paint or coating without compromising on performance. The new portfolio of sustainable additives includes defoamers, rheology modifiers, wetting agents, dispersants, and wax formulations, which all benefit from a significantly increased renewable content, providing a more sustainable solution for paint and coating manufacturers. MÜNZING’s portfolio of renewable additives will be presented during our presentation slot at European Coatings Show on Tuesday, March 28 from 14:50 to 15:10 at Hall 5, stand 243 by Jörg Wollschläger, Business Delevopment Manager. Don’t miss out on learning about 'The Effects of Foam and Air Entrainment and Defoamer Performance in Electric Vehicle Fluids' presented by Safia Peerzada, of Münzing North America, LP at #STLE’s Tribology & Lubrication for E-Mobility Conference Thursday, December 1, 2022 Track 2: Testing 8:00 am – 8:30 am. Sign up for the virtual option and access the post-event digital proceedings of the technical presentations. Green, eco-friendly, and sustainable technology has become the future of the automotive industry, causing a significant increase in the efforts to develop electric vehicles. The fluids required for electric vehicles exhibit different foaming and air entrainment tendencies compared to traditional automotive fluids due to the difference in system chemistry, which requires different defoamer types and test methods to simulate real world application. During use of the fluid, the defoamer functions to minimize foam buildup and entrained air, which is undesirable for reasons such as reduction of lubrication and heat removal. A study of foam tendency and air entrainment in electric vehicle fluids using new lab foam test methods will be reviewed. Furthermore, the performance of various defoamer chemistries will be studied to understand the most optimal defoamer type for electric vehicle fluids.

Foam In Food Production: Where Foam Evolves and How to Fight it The Webinar will take place on July 14th from 16:30 to 17:30 Foam can be a major challenge in food manufacturing. It can cause production stoppages, lead to health and safety concerns, reduce capacities and lead to product loss from overflowing containers. Unfortunately there are many substances in foodstuffs, e.g. proteins, fatty acids, polysaccharides and phospholipids that are inherently foamy. In this webinar we want to introduce the basics of why foam occurs and how to fight it. The webinar will include some hands on examples showcasing the different challenges. The webinar is planned to run 1h with a 45 min talk and 15 mins for Q&A.
